72 teams from across Canada were drawn to Nanaimo for the Canadian Stick Curling Championships

The 2023 Canadian Stick Curling Championships takes place in Nanaimo this week.

The men’s and women’s teams, totaling 72 people from across Canada, including several from Nanaimo, compete at the Nanaimo Curling Center at 105 Wall Street from Thursday, March 29 through Sunday, April 2.

Stick curling began in Nanaimo in 2015. It had a slow start in its inaugural 2015–16 season, according to an article about the start of the game by the Nanaimo Curling Club, but the sport gained traction on the ice the following season and began to pick up. popularity, especially with seniors, throughout the island.

This is the first year that the national championship has been held in Nanaimo.

On-ice action occurs all weekend, with playoffs and closing ceremonies on Sunday, but not all activity takes place on the ice. Participants, coaches and supporters can also take part in social gatherings, banquets and dances, with live entertainment.
