Abbotsford Wrestlers Win Big at Canadian Wrestling Championships

Abbotsford wrestlers had great success at the Canadian Wrestling Championships (U19, U17, U15), which took place from March 24 to 26 at the Vancouver Convention Center.

Rupinder Johal of Robert Bateman High School defended her title in the women’s U19 80 kilogram wrestling division. He took falls in 2:21, 2:39 and 2:09 in his three matches for the crown. Johal, who trained with the Guru Gobind Singh Wrestling Club, also won gold at the 2022 Pan-American Cadet Championship and the Canadian Summer Games. She was recently nominated for the Sport BC women’s high school athlete of the year award.

Tejvir Dhinsa of WJ Mouat scored first place in the U19 Greco Roman 92 kg division and also finished third in the U19 freestyle division. He won by technical fall (8-0) over Prince Albert’s Landon Mudjar in the Greco Roman final. Dhinsa’s career has been on the rise since his 2022 win as he won a Pan-American bronze medal and recently captured gold at the Canadian Cadet Wrestling Championships. Dhinsa was named WCL Cadet Male Wrestler of the Year for 2022. He also trains at GGSWC.

Johal and Dhinsa both won medals at the British Columbia School Sports Wrestling Championships in February. But the pair weren’t the only locals to finish at the CWC.

Jack McEwen of Abbotsford Traditional took first place in the U19 110 kg freestyle division, scoring a pin fall at 1:32 minutes over Arjan Narwal of Surrey.

Gushaan Kahlon of GGSWC won the U15 52 kg freestyle division after losing a technical (11-1) to Austin Calingay of Calgary. Kahlon also finished third in the U15 Greco Roman 52 kg division.

GGSWC dominated the U15 freestyle 68 division, with members Manjot Dhaliwal and Mehar Deol squaring in the final. Dhaliwal pinned Deol in 1:24 to finish first.

Michaeljeet Grewal of GGSWC took first place in the U17 92 kg freestyle division after a 12-0 win over Attila Adamko of London, Ont.

GGSWC athletes topped the U17 110 kg freestyle division, while Jagroop Dhinsa and Manraj Randhawa competed in the final. Dhinsa won with a 10-0 technical fall. Club member Mehtab Rai also took home first place in the U17 125 kg freestyle division.

Other local wrestlers to finish in the top three include: Harvey Grewal of GGSWC (second, U15 62 kg freestyle), Gurkaran Gill of Miri Piri Wrestling Club (second, U15 85 kg freestyle), Dominic Wendt of MPWC (second, freestyle U15 55 kg), Omrao Dhadda of MPWC (third, U19 71 kg freestyle), Gurshar Johal of MPWC (third, U17 51 kg freestyle), Roop Ghuman of GGSWC (third, Greco Roman U15) and Panav Sidhu of GGSWC ( third, Greco Roman U15 57 kg).
