About 30 Afghans remain camped at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, according to the National Refugee Committee (Conare). The airport has become the main gateway to Brazil for Afghans fleeing the radical regime of the Taliban. The number of evacuees fluctuated according to flight arrivals.

In October, at the peak of migration flows, there were about 300 people camped out in makeshift tents at the airport’s Terminal 2. According to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), most were sent to city halls and state government shelters.

Brazil is the only country that grants this type of visa to residents of Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of Justice. About 2,000 Afghans passed through the airport’s Humanitarian Aid Station.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the vast majority of refugees are male, aged between 18 and 59, and university educated. For the most part, Brazil is just a stopping point, with the final destination being the United States, Canada, and several European countries.
