Cord Scott’s original Minot’s latest book is titled “Mud and Fun: Marine Cartoonists in World War I.”

Scott, a professor at the University of Maryland’s Global Campus based in Okinawa, Japan, said the book “discusses the use of cartoons drawn by Marines in the early 1900s to show how they saw subjects such as combat, living conditions, etc.”

He said the book also featured the entire Abian series “Wally” Wallgren’s cartoon in Stars and Stripes, which appeared on page 7 of the weekly paper.

Scott graduated from Minot High School in 1987 and from Minot State University in 1991 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He also has a doctorate in 20th-century US cultural history from Loyola University Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

“I actually started my college teaching career at the age of 23 at MSU. I just graduated from graduate school,” he says.

Scott says of his second book, “Four Color Battle” published by his classmate from Minot High, JuLee Brand. He said the book deals with Canadian Armed Forces stories in American comic books about World War II.

He recently turned over the book to the commander and crew of HMCS Vancouver.

“They were quite surprised and happy to receive it. They in turn ‘created’ me with one of their challenge coins, in this case a challenge chip,” he says.

Scott, a member of the UMGC foreign faculty, teaches history, government, and film. His students are mostly US military personnel and their dependents. He has taught 19 different classes for the UMGC in the last seven and a half years.

In addition to his publications, Scott is the winner of the Drazek Award as teacher of excellence in 2018 (his first year of eligibility), and this year he is the recipient of the UMGC President’s Award. Most recently, he was a panelist for Microsoft’s military group on humor in the military. The panel includes Paul Szoldra, creator of Duffleblog, Max Uriarte, creator of Terminal Lance, Christina Knopf, author “The Art of War: Military Cartoonists from 1800-2010” and Scott.

Anyone interested in Scott’s latest book can download a digital copy from Marine Corps University Press. Hard copies can also be requested free of charge from the employer.

Scott is currently working on a project about African American cartoonists from World War II.
