On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his own Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday. It came a day after the defense minister opposed Netanyahu’s controversial justice reforms.

– Israel’s security has always been, and will always be, the most important task in my life, Gallant said shortly after the news became known.

On Sunday evening, thousands of angry Israelis will take to the streets to demonstrate against the decision. According to Reuters, large crowds blocked a highway in Tel Aviv in protest at Netanyahu’s latest move.

At the same time, the opposition in Israel is roaring against the prime minister.

– Netanyahu has crossed a red line tonight, the opposition says according to Reuters.

Just after 10pm, protesters in Jerusalem have also broken down barricades near Netanyahu’s Jerusalem home, Reuters reports.

At the same time, Israel’s Consul General in New York, Asaf Zamir, chose to resign in protest.

– After today’s developments, it is time for me to fight for the future of Israel to ensure that it remains a champion of democracy and freedom, said Asaf Zamir in a statement.

Gallant was the first of Netanyahu’s cabinet members to speak critically of justice reform on Saturday.

– That process must be stopped, for the safety of Israel and our children. “I have no intention of participating in this,” Gallant said before he was fired.

The law implies, among other things, that parliament should be able to review decisions from the Supreme Court and politicians should have more influence over the nomination of judges to the same courts. It also protected Netanyahu legally during a trial where he was accused of corruption.

Large demonstrations with tens of thousands of participants were held every Saturday for three months. According to Israeli media, more than 100,000 people participated in the massive demonstration in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Among other things, they were intercepted by police equipped with water cannons.

– The anger, pain and discontent grew in all directions, with a force I had never seen before. If only one side wins, whether on the streets or within the Knesset, then the state of Israel is a big loser, Gallant warned on Saturday.
