Leaders of several countries and Brazilian politicians congratulated President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his victory in the second round of elections this Sunday (30).

The former President of the Republic, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, congratulated the newly elected President. On social media, FHC said “democracy won, Brazil won!”

Presidential candidate in the first round of the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), Ciro Gomes greeted Lula on social networks. “I wish the president-elect all the happiness in the honorable mission entrusted to him by the majority of our Brazilian people,” he said.

Several international leaders have already expressed their support for the president-elect. United States President Joe Biden hailed Lula’s victory in a note.

“I send my greetings to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his election as the next President of Brazil through free, fair and credible elections. I hope that we will work together to continue cooperation between the two countries in the months and years to come.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the pair would face “many common challenges” together.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric also took to Twitter to congratulate the president-elect.

In greeting Lula, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he “looks forward to working” with the future president.

“The Brazilian people have spoken. I look forward to working with @LulaOficial to strengthen the partnership between our countries, deliver results for Canadians and Brazilians, and advance shared priorities, like environmental protection. Congratulations, Lulu!”

Panamanian President Nito Cortizo said he hoped the countries would continue “to walk together on the path of friendship and cooperation for the benefit of our nations”.

German Ambassador to Brazil Heiko Thoms also congratulated Lula on his victory, via Twitter: “Congratulations, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on your victory in the elections! We are pleased with the prospect of jointly expanding and further deepening Brazil-Germany relations”.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said he was celebrating “the victory of the Brazilian people” with the election of Lula as President of the Republic.
