Bruges’ success continues – 2-0 over Atlético Madrid

Antonio Nusa started on the bench for the Belgian champions, but came on for goalscorer Ferran Jutglà four minutes from time. There was talk of the 17-year-old’s involvement from the start, as Denmark forward Andreas Skov Olsen had been struggling with food poisoning in recent days, but that was not the case.

In contrast, it was Tajon Buchanan from Canada who got his chance at the top with Ferran Jutglà and Kamal Sowah.

The Norwegian became the second-youngest goalscorer in the Champions League when he netted in the 4-0 thrashing of Porto last time out. Brugge have the full pot in the Champions League and are six points adrift at the top of the table.

Kamal Sowah put the home side ahead from close range when Jutglà took the lead in front of goal in the 36th minute. After just over an hour, Jutglà doubled the lead when he got the ball at Buchanan’s feet on the court.

Tough start

The Spanish capital team came into the game with one win and one loss. The win came at home to Porto, while Germany’s Leverkusen beat Atlético at home. Diego Simeone’s men have had a rocky start to their Champions League campaign.

– We played well. We controlled the first half and created chances but we couldn’t capitalize on them. Their goalkeeper was important today but we are only halfway through the group and I still see our chances in a positive light, Simeone told Movistar.

Antonio Griezmann forms a striker pairing with Álvaro Morata. It was Morata who got the first big chance of the game when he came alone with the Bruges keeper. Simon Mignolet responded with one of several fine saves.

Griezmann attempted from the spot a quarter of an hour from the end after Casper Nielsen brought down Matheus Cunha in the box, but the France star shot over the bar.

First win

A lot happened when Porto picked up their first win against Leverkusen. The score was slow to come, but Zaidi Sanusi scored after 69 minutes.

Before the break, lots of VAR stuff. Callum Hudson-Odoi thought he had made it 1-0 to the visitors but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review. VAR also had to intervene when Mehdi Taremi thought he had given the hosts a 1-0. There was nothing wrong with the score, but Porto goalkeeper David Carmo had handled it in his own area to award Leverkusen a penalty.

Czech top scorer Patrik Schick shot weakly past the keeper for Diego Costa to easily save time.

Sanusi scored the lead on a pass from Taremi. This time there was nothing illegal before scoring.

Wenderson Galeno made it 2-0 three minutes from the end. Jeremie Frimpong was then given a marching order after his second yellow card.
