Canada deploys its troops in the war against Fiona

Fiona hit the Canadian coastal provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador on Saturday. Quebec is also hit by hurricanes. The storm brought heavy rain and big waves along the east coast.

Defense Minister Anita Anand said on Saturday that troops were deployed to remove fallen trees and help with other cleanups, as well as restoring transport links. He hasn’t given a figure for how many soldiers will help.

In the Caribbean, at least five people died from Fiona’s damage in the previous days. In Canada, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries as of Sunday Norwegian time.

House on the lake

But police said a woman may have been swept overboard in the town of Channel-Port aux Basques on Newfoundland’s south coast. He has lost status.

Strong waves hit the city on Saturday.

– I saw the building on the lake. I see memos floating everywhere. This is complete destruction. An apartment was missing, said editor-in-chief René J. Roy of Wreckhouse Press, who lives in the city.

He estimated that between eight and twelve houses and buildings had drifted into the sea.

Trudeau cancels

As the extent of the devastation becomes clear, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has canceled his trip to Japan, where he will attend the funeral of slain former prime minister Shinzo Abe.

– We saw pictures of the destruction in Port aux Basques. Prince Edward’s Island has experienced unprecedented destruction. Cape Breton was also hit. People see their house destroyed. “To people who care, I want to say that we are here for you,” Trudeau said.

More than 415,000 customers of power company Nova Scotia Power, about 80 percent of the province with nearly 1 million residents, were affected by Saturday’s blackout.

More than 500,000 electricity customers were without electricity on Saturday in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
