Canada won another junior WC – VG

TEAM GOLD: Canada has won nearly every junior WC in ice hockey. Here, the Canadian teens celebrated their last win over the Czech Republic in Halifax last night.

(Canada-Czech Republic 3–2 after extra time) The home team were favorites to win the Junior World Cup final in ice hockey – and live up to expectations. But only after a dramatic extension of play.

Then two-goal scorer Dylan Guenther (19) won the game six minutes and 22 seconds into “sudden death” extra play. He currently plays for the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL. Guenther was beautifully played – in a two-on-one situation – by Joshua Roy (19), from club team Sherbrooke in the Quebec junior league.

This was Canada’s fourth consecutive final at the U20 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship, their fifth in six years. Canada has won four of them.

The Czech Republic reached its first final since 2002. In the semifinals, the Czechs beat Sweden after extra time. Sweden lost the bronze final 7–8 (!) to the US after extra time.

In the final, Canada led 2-0, before Jiri Kulich was reduced by seven minutes from the end of regular time. Jakub Kos equalized 56 seconds later.

Connor Bedard dominated and was a huge WC junior star. But in the final, the 17-year-old who plays for Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League didn’t score any goals for Canada.

– Don’t talk about me. We just won the biggest tournament in the world, and I love this team and this country, he told TV channel TSN soon after the decision.

PS! The final was played in Halifax, where Norway’s national A team – including Mats Zuccarello – lost in the World Cup quarter-finals to Canada in 2008.
