SANDVIKEN, SWEDEN — Canadian Kerri Einarson lost 6-5 to Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa in the women’s world curling championships on Thursday.

Manitoba-based Tim Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard, and Briane Harris gave up two steals in the late eighth, but responded with deuce in the ninth to tie the game.

Japan got the match-winning singles when Einarson rubbed guard on a tap attempt late in the 10th.

“It ended up being fine for the weight so it was mismanaged,” Einarson said of the missed shot.

“It’s very unfortunate that this has happened.”

Canada fell to third with Italy’s Stefania Constantini at 6-4. Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg is alone in second place (6-3) behind Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni (9-0).

Canada will take on Dilsat Yildiz of Turkey on Friday before closing out its round-robin match against Madeleine Dupont of Denmark.

The top six arenas in a 13-team field will advance to the playoffs starting Saturday. The medal match is scheduled for Sunday at the Goransson Arena.

Canada started Thursday’s match by forcing Japan to one in the opening end, then earned deuce in the second.

After Japan vacated the two ends, Canada stole a point in a botched comeback from Japan to take a 3-1 lead at the fifth final break.

Japan tied the game in sixth with deuce, leading to a comeback win in the second round.
