Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Faces Cyber Attacks, Intelligence Says Russia Is Involved

OTTAWA, KOMPAS.com – A “cyber incident” first detected last week has disrupted several internet-based services in Canada’s foreign ministry.

Reported CNNCanadian cybersecurity officials are working to restore the internet service starting Monday (24/1/2022) evening.

However, local officials emphasized that public services would not be hampered.

“Canadian essential services through the ministry of foreign affairs are not affected by the incident,” said the Canadian Treasury Council Secretariat.

“At this time, there is no indication that other government departments have been affected by this incident,” the statement added.

Finance Council spokesman Alain Belle-Isle declined to comment when asked who might be responsible for the hack, citing an ongoing investigation.

“We continue to review measures to protect Canadians and our critical infrastructure from electronic threats, hacking, and cyber espionage,” the Canadian government statement said.

Separately, Canadian officials have asked the public to be vigilant in the face of cyber threats.

Canadian intelligence agencies last week advised Canadian critical infrastructure operators to increase awareness and protection against Russian-sponsored cyber threats.

They echoed calls from US and UK agencies to prepare for potential retaliatory cyber activity from Russia in the context of tensions over Ukraine.

It is not clear whether there is a link between Canadian public counsel and the hacking incident that the Canadian foreign ministry faced.

Belle-Isle said Canadian cybersecurity officials regularly issue advice on hacking threats.
