China Calls Canadian PM arrogant as conflict with Huawei heats up

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – China condemns Canadian Prime Minister’s comments Justin Trudeau as a very unreasonable and arrogant expression, when Beijing stepped up to prevent the extradition of Huawei Technologies Co executives. to the United States.

The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa expressed great outrage and the strongest condemnation, protesting Trudeau’s criticism of Canadian citizen Michael Spavor’s 11-year prison sentence. Trudeau has condemned the ruling in Spavor’s trial which he judged to be politically charged.

The embassy also rejected allegations that the prosecution of Spavor and another Canadian, Michael Kovrig, was arbitrary detention meant to pressure Ottawa to block the extradition of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou. The Chinese government views the case as a politically motivated attack on one of its major technology companies.

“There is no such thing as ‘arbitrary detention’ at all. On the contrary, the Canadian side, ignoring the political nature of the Meng Wanzhou incident and acting as an accomplice to the US side, has detained Meng, an innocent Chinese citizen and has not violated any Canadian law at all. once, for nearly 1,000 days. This is arbitrary detention in all respects,” the embassy said in a statement BloombergThursday (12/8/2021).

A spokesperson for the Embassy China in Washington also criticized the US for making reckless and irresponsible comments on Spavor’s case. He urged US authorities to unconditionally revoke Meng’s extradition.

Spavor and Kovrig were detained by China’s top spy agency in December 2018, days after Meng’s arrest in Vancouver and the government has advanced their prosecutions alongside Meng’s extradition struggle.

Spavor’s verdict comes just as Meng’s defense begins a last-ditch effort to prevent her from being sent to the US to face fraud charges. The timing of Kovrig’s verdict remains unclear.

Diplomats from 25 countries, including Japan, Germany and Britain, gathered at the Canadian Embassy before Spavor’s verdict. This gesture showed Beijing that all the eyes of the world were watching.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also issued a statement condemning the use of arbitrary detention to exercise diplomatic influence.

“People shouldn’t be used as bargaining chips,” Blinken said.

Embassy China rejected displays of diplomatic solidarity with Canada as a diplomatic effort by a handful of diplomats from Western countries. “It’s a total waste of time,” he said.
