RMS Titanic Inc., which holds the rights to recover parts of the ship sunk in 1912, is organizing a new expedition to visit the wreck of the transatlantic in the North Atlantic. This trip comes a few months after the tragedy of the OceanGate submersible, which imploded and killed five people.
RMS Titanic Inc. plans to make an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic in May 2024. The information is contained in a report presented by the company in court, in the United States, last Friday (25). The information comes from AP News.
According to the company, the expedition aims to recover artifacts related to the ship, which lie at the bottom of the ocean. The company did not specify how many people were expected to come to the visit or whether everything would be done remotely.
The United States government wants to prevent further voyages to recover Titanic artifacts, including this one from the RMS, on the grounds that it violates federal law that prohibits disturbing the wreckage of the ship, in addition to an international agreement with the United Kingdom. who considers the sinking site a memorial to the more than 1,500 victims of the tragedy.
Lawyers representing US interests explained that the company “cannot ignore” the country’s law and, for this reason, opposes the shipment.
The company said it did not intend to “disturb” the wreckage of the Titanic, but rather to photograph the wreckage in the deteriorated parts, where “it is possible to pass a vehicle from a distance without interfering with the current structure.
According to the company, it is also possible to recover objects from the Marconi room, “if these objects are not fixed in the wreckage”. The Marconi Room houses the ship’s radio which transmitted distress signals during the sinking. “At this time, the company has no plans to cut up the wreckage or separate any part of it,” the RMS defense said.
Tragedy with the Titan
The OceanGate submersible Titan was submerged on the morning of Sunday June 18. Tourists wanted to see the wreck of the Titanic, located in the North Atlantic.
The surface support vessel, the Polar Prince, lost contact with him about an hour and 45 minutes later, according to the US Coast Guard.
A pilot and four passengers were part of the expedition. They are: Stockton Rush, President of OceanGate; billionaire Hamish Harding; Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, a Pakistani businessman and his son; and Paul-Henry Nargeolet, former commander of the French Navy and considered one of the foremost experts on the sinking of the Titanic.
The submersible was reported missing about 700 kilometers south of São João da Terra Nova, capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, according to Canadian authorities, in the area where the Titanic sank in 1912.
