ICYMI: Results rolling – Athletics Canada

Making the 200 meters go by in a flash, hurling home wins, dropping the world’s best time, setting a Canadian record and breaking a conference record… the weekend flew by fast!

Off the field, the new show is emerging as the new home for track and field on CBC Sports.

There’s a lot to watch, so let’s take a look back at the weekend’s news.

Kenya Competing with Aaron Brown?

No… you can’t. Brown continued his fast start to the season by winning the 200 meters at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, Kenya this weekend. Brown overcame a slow start to bounce back and outlast American Kyree King, notching his third podium appearance of the season.

Katzberg Hammering Court

Ethan Katzberg also had a day in the Kip Keino Classic, earning second place in the men’s hammer throw with his best shot (76.38 on the fourth of his six attempts) at the Moi International Sports Center.

Katzberg is another Canadian to off to a hot start, still riding a world leading shot of 78.41 meters earlier this month.

Eurotrip into the Book of Records

Canadian athletes may be traveling to Europe this spring, but this isn’t a backpacking vacation. They put in some serious work and set a new national record in the process.

Two records were set at the May 10 meeting in Breda, Netherlands. David Johnson’s time of 51.52 in the men’s T12 400 meters and Jesse Zesseu’s 51.12 meter shot in the men’s F37 discus are both Canadian records, pending ratification.

Two days later in Belgium, Nandini Sharma clocked 17.28 seconds in the women’s T54 100 meters and Zach Gingras clocked 50.75 seconds in the men’s T38 400 to set a new national record, pending ratification.

Borgella On Top of the World

Bianca Borgella set a new benchmark for the world’s fastest women’s 100 meter T13 this year, at the Ottawa Spring Kick Start event.

His new personal best of 12.12 seconds will also be a new Canadian record, pending ratification.

Plourde Speeding Conference and Provincial Records

Simone Plourde gets things done in just four minutes.

His time of 4:09.48 earned his first PAC 12 title – only the second individual conference win in University of Utah track and field history. He also set a new conference record, as well as a Quebec provincial record, posting the second fastest time in the event for a Canadian of the season.

Northern Athletics Pursuit

Athletics North is the new home for track & field at CBC Sports.

Hosted by Rob Pizzo and featuring insights from Morgan Campbell and other track and field experts, the event will focus on the most topical developments in world athletics, including Diamond League, Continental Tour, Athletics Canada and grassroots local sports.

They will showcase emerging Canadian talent and highlight stars and storylines that will be relevant ahead of the 2024 World Athletics and Paris Olympics – seeking to bridge the gap between casual Olympics fans and track and field fans.

Chase Rob and Morgan.
