How do NBA Play-In Tournaments work?

  • The NBA Play-In Tournaments will be held after the end of the 2021-22 regular season and before the start of the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. 1-6 in the standings of each conference will be guaranteed a playoff place. Team Numbers 7-10 will enter the Play-In Tournament.
  • Every conference No. 7 and 8 teams will face off, with the winner getting the No. 7 seeded in the playoffs. The loser still has one more chance to reach the playoffs.
  • Every conference No. The 9 and 10 teams will face off, with the winner advancing to play the No. loser. 7-vs.-No. 8 games. Loser no. 9-vs.-No. 10 matches will be eliminated from the playoff fight.
  • Loser no. 7-vs.-No. 8 games and winner no. 9-vs.-No. 10 games will then be played against each other. The winner of that game will be No. 8 seeds in the playoffs. The loser will be eliminated from the playoff fight.
  • Outside of the Play-In Tournament, the 2022 NBA Playoffs will follow the usual format, with a full best-of-seven series through to the NBA Finals.
