Lula should be invited to participate in the G7 meeting, in Japan, May | Policy

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) should be invited to participate in the G7 meeting – the group of the seven most advanced industrial countries in the world.

This year, the event will be held in the Japanese city of Hiroshima – from May 19 to 21. A phone call between Lula and Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, will formalize the invitation to Brazil. The hope, according to Itamaraty, is that the summons will be made a week after Lula’s trip to China.

The G7 consists of: Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The group’s intended invitation to Lula was anticipated exclusively by Jornal da Globo. The G7 usually invites countries that are not part of the group, but are in the spotlight, to its meetings. The invitation aims to hear the views of developing countries on the world economy.

Brazil’s last participation in a G7 meeting took place in 2008, during Lula’s second term. Brazil first participated in the meeting in 2003, the first year of Lula’s government. After that, he was invited in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

With invitations from the world’s most developed countries, it is likely that Lula’s trip to Africa, originally scheduled for May, will be rescheduled and moved to July, when the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) summit takes place. , which will be held in São Tomé and Príncipe, on the African coast.

Before going to Japan, Lula will go, later this week, to China and the United Arab Emirates, and, in April, to Portugal. After the G7 meeting, the Brazilian president has scheduled another international trip. Practically one month.

In September, following tradition, Lula will deliver the opening address to the UN General Assembly, in New York. That same month, he had to go to a meeting of the G20, the group that brought together the world’s 20 major economies. And in November it will be the turn of COP 28, the UN climate summit, in the United Arab Emirates.
