Mazepin turns to Canadian government in bid to return to F1

Russo is seeking another chance to compete and hopes his name will be removed from the sanctions list in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

Nikita Mazepina Russian driver who competed in a GP with the team Haas To Formula 1 for the last time in the 2021 season, he is looking to get back into the category grid and has filed a lawsuit against the Canadian government as part of his aim to return next year.

According to Canadian media reports, Mazepin’s request seeks recognition that he is not linked to activities related to the Russian government and which have an impact on the armed conflict between his country of origin and Ukraine. The document is addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly.

“He is a young sportsman and professional motorsport driver who is in no way involved in the aggression suffered by Ukraine,” the petition filed with the court reads.

Furthermore, they state that it is essential to be able to compete immediately because, if he does not do so next year, he may not have another opportunity to return to Formula 1. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to be recruited again as an F1 driver or as a driver in other motor racing championships”.

In December 2022, Mazepin made a similar request to be removed from the list, but Minister Joly did not respond within 90 days. Mazepin lost his position when the conflict broke out between Russia and Ukraine. The pilot’s father’s company, Uralkali, has been added to the sanctions list.
