TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Meta, Facebook’s parent company, will restrict access to state media Russiaincluding RT or Russia today and Sputnikon its platforms throughout the European Union.

Discourse on banning Russia’s state-owned television network RT and news agency Sputnik actually emerged from the European Union on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Russia’s state-run media activity on Facebook and other social media, is considered to have caused controversy during the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Meta, Microsoft, and Google as well as YouTube have taken action in recent days to restrict Russian state media from making money from advertising on their platforms.
Twitter has even banned RT and Sputnik advertised on its site in 2017. With the invasion still under way, Twitter said Monday it would label and limit the visibility of tweets containing content from media outlets affiliated with the Russian government.
In addition to several Silicon Valley-based tech giants, telecom operators in Canada have reportedly also stopped offering line services RT.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced special military operations in Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, 2022, after months of tension. Many civilians were killed in this invasion, which has earned Russia criticism from various quarters.
