Mystique Ro sweeps the NAC skeleton race | News, Sports, Jobs

LAKE PLACID — With bobsled and skeleton season coming to a close, Mystique Ro, of Nokesville, Virginia, is dominating this weekend.

The 28-year-old Slider swept both women’s frame races on Saturday and Sunday during the North American Cup in Lake Placid.

“It’s good to see that after a long season I can still put together some good, consistent runs and have a quick push to put everyone in the mix,” said Ro.

He won Saturday’s race in two laps of 1 minute, 50.24 seconds. Ro then followed that up with a win on Sunday in 1:52.32 at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

“This is my home track so it’s nice to end on a good note and start the season on something really positive,” he says.

The NAC race is the final event on the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton calendar. Ro finished the season with three European Cups and two Intercontinental Cup wins. He said it was great to see the pinnacle of the progress he has made this season.

On Saturday, Ro posted two fastest lap times on his way to a NAC victory, but after the race, he said he was feeling very tired and did not know if he could repeat his Sunday form.

“I’m not sure if I can get the boost I need,” said Ro. “But coming today – well rested – I feel much more positive about my prep work and can just relax and enjoy it and have fun, that’s what skating is all about. Just having fun.”

Freya Tarbit of England took second place on Saturday in 1:51.86, while teammate Amelia Coltman was third in 1:52.28. On Sunday, Coltman (1:53.64) beat Tarbit (1:54.17) to take second place while Tarbit finished third.

Michelle Toukan of Team USA finished in fourth place on both days. Toukan finished with a time of 1:52.44 on Saturday and 1:55.15 on Sunday.

On the men’s side, England’s Jacob Salisbury completed a skeleton sweep on Saturday and Sunday. He won Saturday’s race in 1:47.91, before entering Sunday’s race in 1:50.72.

Kyle Donsberger of Canada finished in second place on Saturday in 1:49.27. The Canadian also finished in third place on Sunday with a time of 1:51.03. Livio Summermatter of Switzerland took third place in Saturday’s race in 1:49.46.

Bradley Nicol, of Springville, Utah, is the only American to finish on the podium in the men’s frame event. He finished in second place on Sunday, which is his best career result so far.

“Last year at NAC I struggled just not to finish last,” said Nicol, “So even taking second today was a really exciting thing for me.”

Nicol, 23, recorded the fastest first warm-up time, which put him in first place. In lap two however, she had the third fastest running time, which dropped her to second overall. He finished in 1:50.86.

“I don’t know how to handle those emotions,” he says. “I’ve never been in that position before and I’m grateful to finish the race.”

Despite posting a career-best finish to end the season, Nicol said all he was thinking about right now was getting back home and seeing his wife.

“That’s all I want right now” said Nicol. “We will start thinking about next season from next week.”

Monobob

Australian Breeana Walker opened the first of two NAC monobob races by finishing in first place on Thursday. Walker finished with two laps of 2:01.79.

Laura Nolte from Germany (2:02.02) and Lisa Buckwitz (2:03.19) placed second and third respectively. (2:01.79).

On Friday, Nolte took first place in 2:00.63, while Walker (2:00.70) took second and Buckwitz (2:02.01) third.

Riley Compton of Team USA took fourth place on both days, while Lauren Brzozowski took fifth place twice. Sylvia Hoffman placed seventh on Thursday and Friday.

Two person sled

Team USA’s Frank Del Duca and Darius Joseph earned first place in Thursday’s two-man bobsled race, finishing with a combined time of 1:54.29. Team USA’s Geoffrey Gadbois and Paul Rabic (1:54.39) took second place, while Canada’s Pat Norton and Keaton Bruggeling (1:54.50) took third.

Norton and Bruggeling won Friday’s event with a time of 1:52.98. Del Duca and Joseph were in second place with a time of 1:53.04 and Gadbois and Rabic were third with a time of 1:53.46.
