Overseas, Lula prevailed throughout much of Europe; Bolsonaro picked it up in Israel, Japan and the US

Intermediate polarization Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the race for the Republican presidency also became a keynote among Brazilian voters voting abroad.

According to the latest bulletin issued by the High Electoral Court (TSE) earlier this Monday (3), Lula leads with 47.13% of the vote (137,643), against Bolsonaro 41.63% (121,591) – with 99.15% of the ballots counted in overseas.

In contrast to the voting results in the Brazilian region, Ciro Gomes (PDT), with 4.54% (13,257 votes) coming slightly ahead Simon Tebet (MDB) which reached 4.47% (13,053). The difference in votes between the two is less than 200 votes, still leaving room for the emedebista candidate to take third place.

Luiz Felipe D’Ávila (Novo) emerged with 1.28% of the vote (3,752), followed by Soraya Thronicke (União Brasil), with 0.26% (753).

So far, of the foreign cities that have tallied 100% of the polls, Lula has won on 79, and Bolsonaro, on 44.

In the UK and in most European countries – such as France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway – the former president outperformed the candidates for re-election. Bolsonaro, in turn, won in Japan, Israel and most cities in the United States.

In South America, Lula won elections in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia. Bolsonaro beat petista in Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador and Venezuela.

In China, Lula garnered the highest number of votes, mainly due to his wins in Beijing and Shanghai – while Bolsonaro won in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Petista also won in South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Lebanon.

Bolsonaro received more votes than Lula in the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Indonesia, Mozambique and the Dominican Republic.

According to the TSE, more than 697,000 Brazilians living abroad can vote in the country’s presidential elections – those living outside Brazil can only vote for the president, and for no other position.

The number of registered voters increased by 39% compared to 2018. The number of overseas voters is equivalent to 0.45% of the 156.4 million citizens who voted in Brazil.
