NATO and European Union (EU) foreign ministers meet this Thursday in Brussels in extraordinary meetings, both in an extended format, to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, on the ninth day of Russia’s military offensive.
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will be present at both meetings, at which Portugal will be represented by Foreign Minister, Augusto Santos Silva.
In the morning, starting at 10:00 local time (09:00 Lisbon time), an extraordinary meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the organization’s main political decision-making body, will take place at NATO headquarters, where each member country has a seat, at the head of the level. diplomacy.
The meeting, in person and to be chaired by the Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, will be extended to the heads of diplomacy of Sweden, Finland and the European Union, the Alliance revealed on Thursday.
Stoltenberg accuses Russian president of destroying peace in Europe
Last Tuesday, during a visit to Poland, Stoltenberg accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of destroying peace in Europe, but said the Alliance saw no need to change its nuclear weapons alert level, despite threats from authorities.
“We will always do whatever it takes to protect and defend our allies, but we don’t think there is a need now to change the alert level of NATO’s nuclear forces,” Stoltenberg said.
Meeting
Starting at 15:40 local time (14:40 Lisbon time), the 27 heads of diplomacy will meet in what is the fifth Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union in just over a week, also extended.
The meeting was organized on Wednesday by the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, who invited colleagues from allied countries to the meeting and the Ukrainian minister, Dmytro Kuleba, who will participate via videoconference.
In addition to the 27 people, Kuleba, Blinken and the heads of diplomacy from Britain, Liz Truss, and Canada, Melanie Joly, as well as the Secretary General of NATO, will also attend the meeting.
