The Minister of Agriculture launched the 22nd State Coffee Quality and Sustainability Contest

The Government of São Paulo, through the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, will launch this Wednesday (24/05), at the Institute of Biology, at 10 am, the 22nd State Contest “Coffee Quality and Sustainability”.

In the presence of the Secretary of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, Antonio Junqueira, this edition will sample the 10 best coffees in the State.

The state contest is held every year, always on May 24th, when National Coffee Day is celebrated. Winners will be announced in the second half of November this year. All coffee farmers in the State of São Paulo can register and compete, with the samples produced by them in this harvest.

Winners of the 2022 edition will be announced at the event “Quality and Sustainability of Coffee” State Contest enables adding value to products, imparting the diversity of flavors and aromas of coffee grown in the state to consumers, generating value for the entire chain, from production to consumption.

The goal is to encourage the production of high-quality coffee, promote better and more sustainable farming practices, and strengthen coffee culture in the growing areas of the State of São Paulo.

Coffee Production in the State of São Paulo

In November 2022, the first survey of the 2022/23 coffee crop was conducted in the state of São Paulo, with an estimated harvest of 4.75 million 60 kg bags (corresponding to 284.9 thousand tons of product), representing an increase of 7.2 % over the 2021 coffee crop /22 (September 2022).

There was an 8.0% expansion in the estimated median productivity in the state, accounting for 25.2 sc./ha. Among the most relevant coffee belts in the state, the highest yields were recorded in the Bragança Paulista Region with 27.1 sc./ha, followed by the main center of the crop, the Franca belt, Franca region, with 26.9 sc./ha. The Marília and Ourinhos regions showed increased production compared to the previous closing harvest, while the São João da Boa Vista Region showed relative stability compared to the last harvest (+1.1% only). The effects of the 2021 frosts are still being felt in the Mantiqueira region due to the damage caused by the intense cold, many plots have had to undergo conduction pruning, aiming to revitalize the productive surface.
