Indigenous peoples of Pará participating in the UN Biodiversity COP-15, in Montreal, Canada, criticized Canadian mining company Belo Sun, which intends to install Brazil’s largest open pit gold mine in the Volta Grande do Xingu (PA) region.

The criticism embarrassed Canada’s Minister for the Environment, Steven Guilbeault, who saw holding COP-15 as a great opportunity for the country to take a leadership position in implementing actions aimed at preserving biodiversity.

However, leaders of Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (Apib) and the NGO Amazon Watch used the conference to demonstrate that the situation of Belo Sun in Pará directly contradicts the discourse of the Canadian government.
