Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19, as well as Saint Joseph’s Day.

It is said that in Washington, United States, in 1909, Sonora Louise, proud of her father, for overcoming all the difficulties in raising their children alone after his wife passed away, giving birth to 6 sons, decided to celebrate the day.

In 1910, Sonora submitted a petition to the Ministerial Association of Spokane, Washington, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19 that year.

There is another version which states that Father’s Day was born in Babylon, in 2000 BC, when “A boy named Elmesu wrote a message to his father on clay tablets, wishing his father health, happiness and long life.”

Today’s celebration varies from country to country, here are some of the dates celebrated:

  • March 19: Portugal, Italy, Spain, Andorra, Bolivia, Honduras and Liechtenstein
  • 2nd week of June – Paraguay
  • 3rd week in June – United Kingdom, Argentina and Peru
  • June 17 – Canada
  • June 21 – Greece
  • 2nd week of August – Brazil and South Africa
  • Week 2 of September – Australia
