Two children died after a bus crashed into a daycare center near the Canadian city of Montreal, police said on Wednesday, an act witnesses said may have been deliberate.
Six other children who were taken to hospital after the incident were “out of danger,” said Erika Landry, police spokeswoman for Laval, where the crèche is located.
“The driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested for manslaughter and reckless driving,” he added.
Police in Laval told AFP they had cordoned off a “great perimeter” to limit traffic around the building, which has been partially destroyed.
The incident occurred around 0830 (1330 GMT). Several children were trapped under the vehicle and rescued by rescuers. They were attended by Sainte-Justine hospital.
Images broadcast on television showed the bus inside the building and part of the roof above the vehicle.
“I helped pull the driver off the bus,” one parent told Radio Canada before breaking down in tears. According to his wife, the man was “half naked” and witnesses saw him “deliberately throw himself into the crèche”.
Now, police are investigating whether the act was intentional.
