Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that he would “impose economic sanctions” over the actions of Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin, after recognizing the independence of Ukraine’s breakaway territories, Donetsk and Lugansk.
“This is a blatant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law. Canada remains safe in supporting Ukraine – and we will impose economic sanctions for this action.”

The authorities also condemned and rejected Russia’s decree “ordering the entry of military forces into Ukraine”.
“We remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence. Canada and our allies will defend democracy and the will of the Ukrainian people.”

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly spoke with her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, by telephone on Monday evening, expressing “deep concern at Russia’s blatant disregard for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.”
