MANILA, Philippines —Filipino-Canadian Gabriel Obusan has committed to the University of Santo Tomas and will qualify to play in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

Products from St. Catholic School Martin in Mississauga, Ontario will spend five full years with the Growling Tigers.

Obusan chose UST believing it was the best school for him.

“I’ve seen many schools at UAAP and UST make me feel like family. I like the people here, I like the way we work here and it’s really made me a better player,” said Obusan. “I just want to make an impact so we can win some games at UAAP.”

UST coach Pido Jarencio believes the 6-foot-tall winger, who impressed for Toronto in the Division 1 2023 NBTC National Finals, will be a huge boost for the Growling Tigers.

“Obusan will really help us. He has a big body and can body punch in and he can shoot outside,” said Jarencio in Filipino. “He is a perfect fit for our system at UST.”

18-year-old Obusan averaged 13.7 points on 27 percent shooting from deep, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals in the national high school basketball tournament.

Obusan and Toronto were eliminated by the UST Tiger Cubs in a game of pool.
