Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky on Friday rejected the idea of a “brief truce” with Russia, saying it would only make matters worse.
“Russia is now looking for a brief truce, a pause to regain strength. Call it the end of the war, but that pause will only exacerbate the situation,” Zelensky said in remarks broadcast at the International Security Forum in Halifax, Canada. 🇧🇷True, lasting and honest peace can only be the full end result of Russian aggression.”said the Ukrainian president.
The White House has previously said Zelensky is the only one who can decide when to start peace talks with Russia, rejecting the idea that he was pressuring Kiev to negotiate an end to the war, which began on February 24 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. .
The US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, had suggested on Wednesday that Kiev could take advantage and open negotiations to end the war, after its significant battlefield victories and with Russian forces significantly weakened.
However, Milley also stated that Ukraine’s chances of militarily expelling Russia from all of its territories were low. “The chances of a Ukrainian military victory, driving the Russians out of all of Ukraine, including Crimea, are not high,” the US military chief said, though he hinted that there might be a political solution to withdrawing from Moscow.
