“Portuguesa” by Carminho arrives in the US

Fado singer Carminho’s latest album, “Portuguesa”, will be released in the United States in August, with the singer starting a North American tour in October, his promoter announced this Monday.

The album “Portuguesa”, which contains, among others, the song “O Quarto” (Carminho/Fado Pagem, by Alfredo Marceneiro), will be released on August 18, in the United States, on the Nonesuch label, and the fado singer starts on August October 6, in Boston , United States, touring nine stages in North America and Canada.

The album was released in Portugal last March, has been recorded over the past two years, mainly in the spring of 2022, and features several guest authors, such as Rita Vian, who composed “Simplesmente ser”, Luísa Sobral, in “You sit next to me “, Joana Espadinha, in “Ficar”, and Brazilian musician Marcelo Camelo, who wrote “I ride my boat in the sea”.

This list of Carminho’s sixth album also includes “Meu amor marinar”, by António Campos and Joaquim Pimentel, created by the fado singer Saudade dos Santos (1938-2015), and “Alcântara Vem Cantar” (José da Silva Nunes and Jorge d’ Ávila), march from Alcântara, in 1969, recorded by Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999).

After Boston, where Carminho performed at the Berklee Performance Center, the artist performed on October 8 at South Orange Performing Arts, in New Jersey and, the following day, appeared on stage at City Winery, in Chicago.

On the 12th, the performers of “Saia Rodada” (Diogo Clemente/Valter Rolo) sang at the Bing Concert Hall, in Stanford, and, the following day, at the San Francisco Jazz Center, in San Francisco, and closed the show on the United States stage in Los Angeles , with a performance at Luckman Fine Arts, on the 14th.

Carminho crossed the border and on the 15th appeared at the Centennial Theatre, in Vancouver, Canada, where he also has performances scheduled at the Théâtre Outrmont, in Montreal, on October 18, and at the St. Louis Arts Centre. Lawrence, in Toronto, on the 21st.

On this tour Carminho was accompanied by musicians André Dias, on Portuguese guitar, Flávio César Cardoso, on viola, Pedro Geraldes, on guitar, Tiago Maia, on bass, and João Pimenta Gomes, on mellotrón (electromechanical keyboard, which uses previously recorded sounds on magnetic tape adjusted to each tone).

The CD “Portuguesa” appeared five years after “Maria”, for which the fado singer also wrote several songs. Carminho was born amidst the guitar and sound of fado.

The daughter of fado singer Teresa Siqueira, she made her public singing debut at the age of twelve, at the Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon, after singing at the fado house her parents ran, “O Embuçado”, in Lisbon.

He released his first album in 2009, “Fado”, which was followed by “Alma” (2012), “Canto” (2014), “Carminho canta Tom Jobim” (2016) and “Maria” (2018).

Throughout his career, the fado singer has recorded and sung with artists from other musical fields, namely Chico Buarque, Brazilians Milton Nascimento and Marisa Monte, Spanish Pablo Alborán, and Portuguese HMB and Bárbara Bandeira.
