The date requiring a visa to enter Brazil for general passport holders from Australia, Canada and the United States has been postponed to April 10, 2024. The new date was announced by Decree Number 11,875, published in the supplementary edition of the Official Gazette of the Union this Thursday, January 4. The text signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva amends Decree no. 11,692, issued in September 2023, which stipulates the start of visa collection on January 10.

The extension is intended to complete the system implementation process and avoid starting implementation in a period approaching the peak travel season at the end and beginning of the year. The aim is to ensure the safe implementation of this policy, without consequences for the tourism sector.

Reciprocal — Reciprocity is a historical principle of Brazilian diplomacy. In September 2023, upon publication of the previous version of the decision, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, clarified that the Federal Government was always willing to negotiate visa waivers on a reciprocal basis. “This means that countries that accept Brazilian citizens traveling without a physical visa, we will provide the same benefits,” he explained.

“Under the previous administration, obligations for Americans, Canadians, Australians and Japanese citizens were suspended. These measurements are provided free of charge. There is no reciprocity. Brazilians continue to need visas to travel to these countries,” he recalled.

In May 2023, President Lula was in Japan and signed an agreement to exclude Brazilians entering the country and Japanese arriving in Brazil from visas. These exclusionary measures came into force in September last year.
