Canada and EU adopt initiatives supporting Ukrainian refugees – 03/26/2022

Ottawa, March 26, 2022 (AFP) – Canada and the European Union (EU) on Saturday announced the launch of an international fundraising campaign for Ukrainian refugees, which will culminate on April 9 with a “donor conference” co-hosted by Brussels and Ottawa.

“The ‘Stand Up For Ukraine’ campaign seeks to mobilize governments, institutions, artists, companies and individuals to allocate funds to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and neighboring countries,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office said in a statement. with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The two leaders said they were responding to a call by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on April 9 to hold “massive demonstrations … on social media in support of those forced to leave Ukraine”.

The European Commission and Canadian government initiatives were carried out in collaboration with the NGO Global Citizen.

This will culminate in a “donor conference convened on April 9 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, aimed at raising funds and mobilizing broader support” for Ukrainian refugees and displaced people.

Nearly 3.8 million people have fled Ukraine, mostly to Poland, since the invasion of Russia on February 24, according to the United Nations, which estimates the number of refugees inside Ukraine at nearly 6.5 million.

In total, about ten million people, more than a quarter of the population, had to leave their homes.
