Canada stops arms sales to Türkiye

A school was destroyed after being hit by shells fired by Azerbaijani forces in Nagorno-Karabakh's largest city, Stepanakert.

Canada suspended all arms sales to Türkiye, a NATO member. The country is currently investigating Turkey's use of military technology in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

– In line with Canada's strong export control regime and as a result of the ongoing struggle, I have suspended relevant export permits to Turkey, so that we have time to further assess the situation, said Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne on Monday.

He has ordered an investigation into reports in Canadian media that Canada's imaging and targeting systems on drones had been used by Azerbaijan in clashes with Armenia.

Disarmament activists have documented sales of Wescam equipment to Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan.

In October 2019, Canada decided to freeze the issuance of military export permits to Turkey, following military operations against Kurds in northern Syria, but the decision was revoked in May.
