Canadian lab confirms mad cow disease in Brazil is an isolated case – Political Connection

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) confirmed last Thursday (2) that the registration of “mad cow disease” in an animal in Pará is an atypical case, that is, say without risk of transmission.

This possibility was already given as real by the federal government, which was only waiting for the final result of the examinations to confirm it.

The procedures for informing the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) and the Chinese authorities have already been initiated by the Brazilian government. Last week, Brazil suspended the export of beef to China after the news broke. The suspension followed the health protocol between the two countries and sales are expected to resume.

The atypical form of bovine spongiform encephalitis occurs in older animals, spontaneously in nature, rather than classically transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food.

“As this is an atypical case, i.e. it occurred from natural causes in a single 9-year-old animal and all health measures were adopted quickly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock immediately adopts the measures, in accordance with the sanitary protocols, so that exports of Brazilian beef are restored as soon as possible, ”said the federal government in a note.
