Fire aboard a Canadian frigate

FIRE: Early Thursday morning, a fire was reported aboard the Canadian frigate HMCS Fredericton. Here is the ship in the Adriatic Sea in 2015.

HMCS Fredericton was en route to Exercise FLOTEX and was off the coast of Nord-Trøndelag when a fire broke out and the ship’s engine stopped. The fire was extinguished and the engine was running Thursday morning.

– There was a fire on board a military ship, spokesperson Ivar Moen at the Operational Headquarters (FOH) of the Norwegian Armed Forces confirmed at the Norwegian Armed Forces Forum.

It was VG who was the first to report the fire.

Moen says the main rescue center is leading the operation, but says the fire has been extinguished and the ship is moving forward.

– We have supported other ships in the region, he says, and adds that the weather conditions have been difficult in the region.

The main rescue center was informed of the incident just before 5 Thursday morning. Acting account manager Asbjørn Viste told Defense Forum.

– It went out quite quickly and the ship is operating under its own power, explains Viste. He adds that the incident took place in Frohavet, west of Trondheim.

FOH specifies that it is the Canadian frigate HMCS Fredericton. A Facebook update on November 15 confirmed that the ship was in Kattegat as part of an exercise with NATO allies:

The frigate is part of NATO Standing Maritime Force 1 (SNMG1), one of NATO’s four standing naval forces. This is what NATO spokesperson Erik Reynolds said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

– When the fire was discovered, the crew acted immediately and extinguished the fire, Reynolds wrote.

– There are no injuries and the ship is now en route to a Norwegian port for repairs.

The ship was heading north along the Norwegian coast to participate in Exercise FLOTEX, the biggest naval exercise of the year, which began on Monday. The main scenario of the exercise begins on November 20, when several ships will be docked in Bodø.

Nearly 20 ships are participating in the exercise, including a French, German and Danish frigate.
