Obby Khan, First Canadian Muslim Elected to Council in Manitoba

Never before had a Member of the Legislative Council in Manitoba used the Islamic holy book to take their oath of office, until Khan was sworn in as a member of the new legislature for Fort Whyte on Monday (4/4) local time.

“It was a very touching moment for me. My family is here. My mother is here, she is crying and my family is crying. Becoming the first Muslim legislator in the history of Manitoba is not something I take lightly,” Khan said, as reported by the press. CBCTuesday (5/4/2022).

“It’s a huge honor for me to have the opportunity to be the first. It’s so important for the kids to see it, grow up and say, ‘Hey, I look like that guy, I could be there. He did. I can do it. I can do it. make a difference. I can help people,'” he added.

In recent weeks, Khan has been approached by more people who are happy with the difference he can make in their lives as politicians. Then, in his first speech in the legislature, Khan delivered the usual Muslim greeting, “Assalamu’alaikum”.
