Grizzly bears killed by mountain goats in Canada

The remains of a grizzly bear were found on September 4 by a hiker near the Burgess Pass trail near Field in British Columbia.

According to the autopsy report, the bear suffered fatal injuries to its neck and underfoot. The injury is most likely caused by the strong, pointed horns that mountain goats use to defend themselves.

– Grizzly bears attacking mountain goats are relatively common. But this is the first case that my colleagues and I have ever seen, says wildlife ecologist David Laskin Security. He works for Parks Canada.

Horns 30 centimeters long

Mountain goats in this mountainous region can weigh up to 70 kilograms, and their black horns can reach almost 30 centimeters in length.

– The mountain goat’s defensive reaction is to protect itself by using its sharp horns, he noted.

Large goats sometimes graze in the same areas where grizzly bears roam. It is therefore not uncommon for skirmishes to occur where one animal has to pay with its life in the event of a fight.

Usually, the bear emerges victorious from the battle. It usually attacks from behind by biting the neck and shoulders of its prey.

But this time the mountain goats wanted it differently.

The grizzly bear is a subspecies of brown bear that lives in North America. They can weigh up to 500 kilograms and be 250 centimeters long, according to the report Huge Norwegian encyclopedia. In males, the length of the claws reaches 15 centimeters. The Grizzly has a strong hump on its back.
