The United Nations (UN) announced that more than 150,000 Ukrainians have fled Kyiv, the country’s capital, following an escalation of Russian attacks on Ukraine leading directly to Kiev.

Al Jazeera reported that one of the Ukrainians who fled was world-class tennis player Dayana Yastremska.

“He fled to safety in France,” Al Jazeera said on Sunday (27/2/2022).

Yastremska’s escape is known from the 21-year-old tennis player’s tweet on his Instagram account.

Yastremska, who has won three WTA titles and briefly ranked 21 in the world, said she left Odesa with her younger sister with the help of their parents.

“Tired, but my sister and I are safe! Thank you France. Ukraine remains strong. We miss you Home, Mom and Dad,” Yastremska said on her Instagram, posting a photo of herself in Romania and on a trip to France.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine began (2/24/2022) after Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced a military operation into the country. The attack began by blowing up a number of Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv and Mariupol.
