2022 ATP Cup Tennis: Beat Spain, Canada Win First Title

TEMPO.CO, JakartaDenis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime led Canada to the 2022 ATP Cup title. Canada won for the first time by beating Spain in the men’s singles final in Sydney on Sunday.

Shapovalov kicked off Sunday’s top flight with an aggressive display to beat Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-3 to give Canada a 1-0 lead in the $10 million men’s team tournament.

World number 11 Auger-Aliassime sealed Canada’s victory after beating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(3), 6-3.

Canada previously lost heavily against the US in the group stage and had to lose their first game against England.

But Felix Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov gave Canada a comeback with victories over England, Germany and last year’s champions Russia.

“The feeling is great. There’s nothing better than winning… We came back from a tough loss in this competition, losing the first four games, but we never stopped believing,” said Auger-Aliassime.

“We trust each other… so we can get a perfect result.”

Carreno Busta arrives at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena confident, without dropping a set all week at the ATP, and leading 4-1 in his record encounter with Shapovalov.

But the 22-year-old left-hander Shapovalov held on to a barrage of breakpoint opportunities, including five breakpoints in the opening game before sealing victory in one hour 38 minutes and putting Canada 1-0 up.

“I’m a little nervous. Obviously I have a difficult meeting record with Carreno Busta, so I know that this match will be difficult,” said Shapovalov.

Meanwhile, Spain returned to the ATP Cup runners-up for the second time after their last loss to Serbia in the 2020 final, when the team tournament kicks off, reports Reuters.
