After failing to execute a penalty in their Qatar Cup debut, Canada quickly scored a goal in their second match, against Croatia, this Sunday (27).

The clock had just one minute past when Buchanan crossed from the right. Alphonso Davies headed in with power and scored with 1 min 7 seconds. The goal surpassed Dutch striker Gakpo, who opened the scoring against Ecuador with 5 minutes and 3 seconds – the game ended 1-1.

Playing more advanced in the Canadian national team than usual at his club, Bayern Munich, Davies came under a negative spotlight on his debut, against Belgium. On that occasion, despite Canada’s good play, the athlete missed a penalty, saved by Courtois, while the game was still 0-0 – in the second half, Belgium scored the only goal of the game.

However, Davies’ goal had historical significance for Canada, as it was the country’s first in World Cup history. In 1986, in Canada’s only participation so far, the country lost all three of its matches: 1-0 to France, 2-0 to Hungary and again 2-0 to the Soviet Union.

Despite his speed in scoring goals, Davies was unable to match the World Cup record still held by Turkey’s Hakn Sukur in 2002. The striker opened the scoring after 11 seconds against South Korea, in a 3-2 victory for the Turks. (Folhapress)
