TORONTO – Singer-songwriter Inuk Susan Aglukark will be honored with a humanitarian award at the Juno Awards this spring.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences says it honors the musician who grew up in Arviat, Nunavut for his “long-term dedication” to improving the lives of children and youth in the Indigenous North community.

Aglukark, who has won three Juno Awards for his signature mix of Inuit folk, country and pop music, is the founder of the Arctic Rose Foundation.

The charitable organization, which operates in three communities in Nunavut, supports Northern Inuit, First Nations and Métis youth through after-school programs and other creative and cultural endeavors.

Presented by Music Canada, the Humanitarian Award is awarded annually to Canadian musicians who have made a significant philanthropic impact.

Aglukark is set to receive the honor on the opening night of the Juno awards May 14. More awards will be given at the May 15 television party.

“It is an honor to receive this award, and a privilege to have the opportunity to help create a safe space for young Northern Inuit and Indigenous people to explore their own potential and forge cultural connections,” Aglukark said in a statement Wednesday.

“I am proud of the work our team has accomplished at the Arctic Rose Foundation so far, and look forward to expanding our footprint across the North.”
